Certificates can be separated from the object

A certificate of authenticity describes an item but is not attached to it. Once a certified item changes hands, the certificate and the product can be separated, swapped, or reassigned. A fraudster selling a counterfeit can simply pair it with a genuine certificate purchased separately.

Serial numbers are not enough

Serial numbers can be removed, re-engraved, or duplicated. Even laser-etched numbers on watch cases or stamped numbers on luxury bags have been successfully replicated. A number that can be copied is not proof of identity.

Inspection records live in databases, not on the object

Most CPO programs store inspection history in internal systems. When an item is resold privately or through a third-party platform, that history becomes inaccessible or unverifiable. Buyers are left taking the seller's word for it.
